World's Most Creative - Cork Mosaic !

Posted by Editor John On Friday, September 05, 2008 1 comments

Pop art ... the Albanian artist who created the world's largest toothpick mosaic has set another world record with a mosaic made of 229,764 corks.

Big plans ... artist Saimir Strati, 42, created a cork mosaic of a guitarist at the Sheraton Hotel in Tirana, Albania. The artist told visitors to the hotel to "Drink, because I need the corks." He worked 14 hours of work a day for 28 days.

Mediterranean tribute ... Strati glued 229,764 corks of various shapes and colours over a plastic banner measuring 12.94m by 7.1m to show "Romeo with a crown of grapes playing the guitar while dancing with the sea and the sun"

Backing the champion ... Albanians have been following Strati's third world record attempt much more closely than his previous two record-breaking pieces of art, a portrait with nails of Leonardo Da Vinci and a galloping horse made with toothpicks.

Dot matrix ... "I love mosaics, they are a dying genre. I follow the same technique used 3000 years ago," said Strati, at work here on his cork mosaic. "A mosaic requires you to work for a long time and keep the emotion alive," said Strati.

He has a 25-year-old mosaic collection which features one created with fragments of egg shells and a portrait of Elvis Presley, made with compact discs.

Record-holder ... Albanian artist Saimir Strati holds his certificate from Guinness World Records adjudicator Carlos Martinez in front of the largest mosaic made of corks in Tirana.

Take it in ... visitors to the Sheraton Hotel in Tirana, Albania admire Starti's finished cork mosaic.

Giant Spider In The City

Posted by Editor John On Thursday, September 04, 2008 0 comments
Something unforgettable is happening in Liverpool as a highlight of the city’s European Capital of Culture celebrations. Vast in scale and spectacular in execution, this breathtaking new commission from La Machine will spin a tale so magical that an entire city will fall under its spell. Just as The Sultan’s Elephant stopped London in its tracks in 2006, so this three-day adventure will unfold against the landmarks of a great city, stopping the traffic and captivating everyone who sees it.  Prepare to be amazed by a show that will make you believe in the impossible.

During the past 24hrs this gigantic, mechanical, 37ton, 50ft tall spider, complete with 50 hydraulic axes of movement, appeared on the side of a soon-to-be demolished building near the heart of the city, instantly creating a buzz in the area. there’s been talk for the past few weeks about the show’s main star and until the spider appeared last night very few people knew of the form it would take.

A group of French specialist researchers announced that they had been observing the creature, apparently made of steel and wood and a thousand times the size of anything in nature, for weeks. It appears to be female, around 13m tall, and has been dubbed ‘La Princesse’ by the team.

The scientists believe the creature may be about to hibernate, and are attempting to prevent it falling into an inert state, as they are concerned at the potentially catastrophic results of the spider laying up to 1000 eggs.

Scientists have therefore removed the spider from the building and taken it to a research base established at the ACC, at Albert Dock in Liverpool.

World's Most Powerful Vehicle Ever

Posted by Editor John On Tuesday, September 02, 2008 0 comments

ThrustSSC is the most powerful, most extraordinary car ever to be designed to attack the Land Speed Record, and as the SSC (SuperSonic Car) in the name indicates, it is also one of the first with genuine potential to breach the Sound Barrier.

Where Thrust2 used a 17,000 pound thrust Rolls-Royce Avon 302 engine from a Lightning fighter, ThrustSSC is the first car to use not one, but two turbojets.

These will initially be Rolls-Royce Spey 202s from the Phantom fighter, each producing 20,000 pounds of thrust. Richard Noble has acquired two of them, but also has two even more powerful 205 units (25,000lb of thrust) for use when ThrustSSC has proved itself in transonic testing. ThrustSSC thus has the power of 1000 Ford Escorts, or 145 Formula One cars...

It will weighs 10 tonnes, and initial performance estimates suggest it will accelerate from standstill to 100mph (161kph) in four seconds or 0-600mph (1000kph) in 16 seconds. Within five miles (8 km) it will then reach its maximum speed of 850 mph within half a minute.

The driver, any driver, always has the steering wheel in front of him or her - right? Such astounding good sense leads to the logical conclusion that the steering wheel will therefore be connected to movable front wheels for the purposes of keeping the vehicle on the straight and narrow.

ThrustSSC's cockpit is positioned in the middle of the car, between the two massive Spey engines and close to the car's centre of mass. It can be reached from either the rear or the front of the car, and entry is via an opening roof hatch.

Thrust SSC is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey jet engines, as used in the RAF and Royal Navy's Phantom fighter-bomber aircraft. Testing of the car is performed using two Spey Mk202s, while record runs utilise a more powerful hybrid Mk202 - often called a Mk205 - version of the engine.

The Parachute Braking System is employed to slow the car to a speed at which the wheel brakes can safely be used. Although the method of parachute deployment is the same, two distinct standards are provided, one for low speed use on, say a runway at deployment speeds up to some 200 mph, and the high speed system for use up to a speed of 600 mph.

Two parachute containers are fitted. At low speeds, both contain identical parachute assemblies, the second assembly intended only as a reserve, for use in the unlikely event of a malfunction occurring on the primary system. Either system can be used as primary or secondary.

Therefore in short , World Fastest Vehicle or the ThrustSSC, the world fastest car, the record is 1281kph/768 mph. If has wing besides i think can fly into sky. This car using twin Lockheed Martin F-104 engine. It has 39000hp. When full speed advance consumes fuel each minute 40 gallons.

When Even Love Fails

TWO of the teenagers in Friday night's horrific car crash that left three dead and two fighting for their lives were teenage sweethearts.

YOUNG LOVE: Crash survivor Adam Johnson, pictured with girlfriend Rosy White, who died in the Riverton triple fatality.

Adam Johnson has been visited in hospital by family and his girlfriend's sister, but does not remember the crash. Last night his family was waiting to break the tragic news of girlfriend Rosy White's death.

Braydon de la Nougerede and James Klessens, who died along with Rosy, and Adam were all Year 12 students at Corpus Christi College.

Friends and family grieve the loss of their three young friends.

The three 17-year-olds died after a BMW driven by a P-plate driver -- who had only had his licence a month -- was airborne on Vahland Ave, Riverton, at the intersection with High Rd.

The speed limit is 70km/h and witnesses said the car raced through the intersection at up to 140km/h and hit a hump.

Sparks flew as the car landed 12m farther on and one tyre may have blown. The BMW then went sideways for 70m and slid up the medium strip into the tree, throwing debris across the road.

An ambulance driving past just after the crash about 9pm was waved down by horrified witnesses.
The BMW driver from Winthrop, in his parents' car, was killed. A front seat passenger, a boy from Canning Vale, and Rosy from Riverton, who was in the rear, also died at the scene.

The scene of a horrific crash in Riverton that claimed at least three lives.

The exchange student is in intensive care in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital with critical injuries and Adam is in Royal Perth Hospital in a serious condition with injuries, including a broken leg.

Hilary Spoelstra, who lives opposite the crash site, was hosting her daughter's 18th birthday party on Friday night.

``We were just about to cut the cake and there was an incredible bang,'' she said. ``We went outside and I heard the engine whooshing and there was smoke coming out of the vehicle.''

A witness who would only give his name as Byron was at the party with his sister Chantelle.
After laying flowers at the tree yesterday, he said: ``My sister held the hand of one of the passengers and I understand that later the hand went limp and that person passed away.

``My sister hasn't spoken about it. She gets really upset talking about it.''

Another eyewitness Luke Marris, 19, said: ``It was a massacre.

``It was like something you would see in a movie.''

Locals say the hump at the intersection is a hazard.

Ms Spoelstra, who has lived in Vahland Ave for 20 years, said: ``Cars go over the hump at the intersection and they get airborne and the drivers lose control.''

The officer in charge of the major crash section Snr-Sgt Alyson Brett said: ``This was a tragic scene for police who attended and members of the public. The amount of damage to the vehicle was significant.

"From what we've seen at the scene, the amount of damage done to the vehicle, and also what witnesses have told us, it appears the vehicle was travelling too fast.''

The 11 Month Old Giant

Posted by Editor John On Sunday, August 31, 2008 0 comments

This bundle of blubber may only be 11 months old, but he is already the size of an eight-year-old.The giant baby tips the scales at a whopping 61lbs 12oz (28kg) and stands four and a half stone larger than his older brother. Due to his hefty frame the toddler also has to wear huge nappies.

His mother, Milena Orosco de Agudelo, said her son started ballooning at just two months old.

The baby has had undergone a number of medical examinations which suggest he may have a problem with his endocrine system.

Ms Orosco said: 'He had some tests done and the results show that he has a thyroid malfunction.

'Then, he had a cardiogram test done and that test shows that he has the bones of an eight-year-old boy, but they have not told me where that came from.'

The normal weight for a boy his age is between 13lbs 4oz and 15lbs 7oz (6-7kg) and now baffled doctors in Colombia are trying to work out how he became so big.

Doctor David Dias, of the Barranquilla Pediatric Hospital, said: 'The baby will undergo more tests to see if he's obese or we're dealing with hyperthyroidism.'
