Amazing Art With Crayons

Posted by Editor John On Friday, December 12, 2008 1 comments
His most iconic portraits include Barack Obama...

.... and a naked Marilyn Monroe, made primarily of peach-coloured crayons.

An artist creates sculptures using up to 250,000 colouring crayons.

Herb Williams, 36, uses so many crayons he has a personal account with manufacturer Crayola and has the company on speed dial .

His works include animals, household items, and celebrities, such as this sculpture of Johnny Cash, the Man in Black .

The smaller works sell for around £650, while the larger pieces have a price tag of £40,000 .

He lists artists such as Damien Hirst, Banksy and Duchamp among his influences and describes his work as "post-post-post-pop"

The married father-of-two from Tennessee, United States, said: "I'm one of the only individuals in the world with an account with Crayola and have more cases of crayons in my studio than anyone should have a right to own".

The crayons are delivered in single-colour boxes of 3,000 sticks and fill his studio from floor to ceiling .

His work can be bought online at HERE

Undie Run 2008

Posted by Editor John On Friday, December 12, 2008 0 comments
This was probably the biggest we've ever seen. It took 10 minutes for the thousands of students to make it through the Strathmore Ave. tunnel.

Last night's Undie Run was definitely different than years past. After UCLA administrators threatened to ban the event from occurring, the student body stepped in and found a compromise: change the route to end at a more secure and well-lit location. Whether that contributed to last night's lower turnout--around 1,000 students instead of the usual 2,000-3,000--or not, the tradition's flavor has definitely changed. However, for better or worse, those who ran had a blast.

Although the Undie Run has been around since 2002 (in lieu of the Midnight Yell), major media outlets really didn't start to catch on until a few years ago. Last night, ESPN, NBC, FOX News and four LA Times staffers were seen at the event.

One of the other reasons why campus officials wanted to change the route and ending location was because too much damage and repair costs incurred. Here's one part overlooked: everyone is hurdling over this brick fencing into landscaping.

This was probably the biggest we've ever seen. It took 10 minutes for the thousands of students to make it through the Strathmore Ave. tunnel.

UCLA Campus Police did not break out the tactical riot gear for the Fall Quarter.

Barak Obama's Private Book Reveals

Posted by Editor John On Thursday, December 11, 2008 1 comments

A new book, President Obama : The Path to the White House (David & Charles / TIME £9.99), showcases the photographs of Callie Shell, who began covering Obama for Time Magazine in 2006 when his travelling party numbered just three people in a van: the driver, Obama and Shell. Her photographs reveal Obama's private, unguarded side, his repose with his family, and capture the awe and excitement his campaign generated .

November 7 2007 : Ready for showtime. Drumming up support in county after county, Obama, in a rare solitary moment, waits in a stairwell before addressing a crowd in Muscatine, Iowa.

January 1 2008 : Strategist. To create his army of volunteers, Obama worked to energise groups like this one, at a gym in Davenport, Iowa.

January 6 2008 : Mr Cool. With two days to go before the New Hampshire primary, while facing sharp attacks from Hillary Clinton, Obama kicks back on the campaign bus

January 6 2008 : Rest for the weary. In the middle of a long day of events in New Hampshire, Obama grabs a quick nap on his campaign bus as he heads to another rally.

March 1 2008 : Footsore. His shoes worn down by campaigning, Obama conducts press interviews on the phone after a rally at Rhode Island College in Providence.

April 5 2008 : Competitive streak. Not to be outsone by two aides who each did a pair of pull-ups, Obama does three before stepping out to address the crowd at the University of Montana.

April 21 2008 : Explaining his health plan. Obama pops in to greet locals, including this curious young man, at a diner in Scranton, a day before the Pennsylvania primary.

April 22 2008 : Fuelling up. With Michelle (and a large press corps) on hand, Obama grabs a bite at a Pittsburgh diner on the morning of the Pennsylvania primary.

July 4 2008 : Hooping it up. Even at the height of the campaign, there were moments of levity, as at this Independence Day picnic in Butte, Montana.

November 4 2008 : Grand entrance. The newly-elected First Couple walk onto the stage at Grant's Field, Chicago.

World's First And Most Strange ' Zero Star ' Hotel

Posted by Editor John On Wednesday, December 10, 2008 1 comments
Cheap digs ... the Null stern Hotel in the small town of Sevelen, Switzerland, will become the world's first 'zero star hotel' when it opens in 2009.

Going underground ... the hotel has been developed inside a former nuclear bunker.

Close shave ... guests can swap expensive luxury hotel add-ons for prison-style essentials for just $14 a night.

Sleep company ... visitors are treated to dorm-style accommodation with Swiss army-standard beds.

Safe haven ... hotel guests will be safe from terrorist attacks in the cosy Cold War bunker.

Up-grade ... visitors can upgrade from dorm-style accommodation to their own room, complete with unpainted concrete walls, for $39.

Family affair ... guests will receive a complimentary pair of slippers to venture across the cold concrete floors and mingle with fellow inmates.

Also on offer is a set of earplugs to drown out the noisy ventilation system.

Bottle it up ... the converted nuclear bunker is too expensive to heat, so guests are treated to free hot water bottles to keep them cosy.

Wheel of unfortune ... like the rest of the hotel, the interior artwork is a lot to be desired.

Face value ... and the exterior isn't exactly inviting, either.

We're open ... at least they went all out on advertising the hotel.

Top 10 Greatest Sports Scandals Ever

Posted by Editor John On Tuesday, December 09, 2008 0 comments
1. The O.J. Simpson Trails : Never has a professional athlete fallen from such heights to such depths as O.J. Simpson has. Simpson, a former Heisman Trophy winner, a longtime NFL star running back and a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame. In 1973, he became the first running back to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single season. After his career was over, he became a football analyst, an actor and a commercial spokesman. Then, shockingly, he was arrested in 1994 and charged with the murder of former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman. The trial was one of the most publicized legal proceedings ever. Simpson was acquitted of the murder charges but was later found criminally liable for Goldman’s death by a civil jury. He and a co-defendant were also recently found guilty of multiple felony counts, including kidnapping and armed robbery. The former football star now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.

Of course, by no stretch of the imagination could we include all of the major scandals to ever cast a pall over professional sports. Among those that were close, but just couldn’t make the cut, include the fixed fight between Jake LaMotta and Billy Fox in 1947, the Minnesota Viking’s Party Boat incident in 2005, the 2007 Formula One espionage scandal and, of course, the New England Patriots’ Spygate scandal. Any other notable sporting scandals you think should have been included on our list? Post your comments below and let us know about them!

2. MLB And Steroid Scandals : From BALCO to the Mitchell Report and everything in between, baseball and steroid scandals have become inexorably linked. Several players, such as former stars Jose Canseco and Ken Caminiti as well as Yankees DH Jason Giambi, admitted to using steroids during their careers. Several others, including Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Miguel Tejada, were named in the Mitchell Report, filed by former U.S. Senator George Mitchell following a lengthy investigation. 500-home run hitter Rafael Palmeiro tested positive for steroids, while unsubstantiated allegations continue to surround all-time home run king Barry Bonds. There is no doubt that few scandals have has as much on a impact on a sport, both in perception as well as in reality, as the steroid scandal that has touched Major League Baseball.

3. The Black Sox Scandals : The subject of the excellent book and movie Eight Men Out, the Black Sox Scandal involves the involvement of several members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox in a conspiracy to fix the World Series. As the legend goes, it was Sox first baseman Arnold Gandil who first came up with the idea to throw the Series, and used his underworld connections to set things up. He played on his teammates’ mutual distaste for Chicago owner Charles Comiskey. Gandil and seven other players (Eddie Cicotte, Oscar Felsch, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Fred McMullen, “Buck” Weaver, Charles Risberg and Claude “Lefty” Williams) were banned from baseball for their part in the fix, which led baseball owners to create the new office of Commissioner of Baseball to oversee league activities.

4. Tour de France Doping Charge : Doping scandals at the Tour de France date back to the early 1900s, but it was in 1998 that the first major doping scandal erupted, complete with hotel-room raids by French police and a sit-down strike by riders on the 17th stage. Stricter drug testing requirements followed, as well as the formation of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Nonetheless, doping allegations remain a constant at the Tour de France, with seven-time former champion Lance Armstrong being a favorite target. Despite relentless accusations, Armstrong has never been found guilty of using illegal performance enhancers, although several others have, including Jan Ullrich and Floyd Landis in 2006 and Alexander Vinokourov and Cristian Moreni in 2007.

5. Tim Donaghy : Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy set off a firestorm of controversy in 2007. That summer, an FBI investigation found that Donaghy had placed tens of thousands of dollars worth of bets on games that he officiated. Worse yet, he admitted that he made calls that affected the outcome of the game, so that he could manipulate the point spread and win his wagers. Donaghy also went on to say that he was not the only NBA referee involved in such behavior, and that the league themselves sometimes ordered officials to extend playoff series to help increase TV ratings and ticket sales. Commissioner David Stern has denied this charge, and while the furor surrounding this scandal has died down in recent months, it nonetheless called into question the integrity of an entire sports league.

6.The Kobe Bryant Sexual Assault Case : During the summer of 2003, Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old Colorado woman. Bryant had been staying at a hotel in the Eagle, Colorado area in preparation for knee surgery when the incident took place. Charges were dropped after the accuser refused to testify, and a civil lawsuit was settled out of court. Bryant would later admit that he had indeed had sexual relations with the woman, but claimed that it was a consensual affair. As a result, Bryant lost several of his endorsement deals, including a lucrative one with fast food giant McDonalds. The Bryant case was voted the top sports story of 2003 by the Associated Press.

7. Pete Rose Bets on Baseball : It was in 1989 that baseball first questioned then Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose about rumors he had bet on baseball. He denied the charges in February, but new commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti hired a lawyer by the name of John Dowd to investigate Rose and the accusations against him. Dowd uncovered information that claimed Rose had bet on more than 50 Reds games in 1987 alone. Rose denied the allegations until August 1989, when he agreed to an indefinite ban from baseball. He has since admitted to betting on baseball and specifically on the Reds, and has applied for reinstatement to Major League Baseball, but remains banned from the game to this day. As it is, Rose is ineligible for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, a controversial situation in and of itself that many fans and sports journalists feel should be rectified.

8. Mike Tyson Rape Conviction : Mike Tyson has been at the center of many, many controversies during his career. After all, this is a man who once said he wanted to eat Lennox Lewis’s children and bit the ear off of Evander Holyfield. However, no incident was as serious as Tyson’s 1992 conviction for the rape of Rhode Island native Desiree Washington. Washington accused Tyson of raping her in an Indianapolis hotel room in 1991, and after a lengthy trial, Tyson was found guilty and sentenced to six years in prison. He would serve only three before being released and returning to the boxing ring.

9. NFL Players Gone Wild : When it comes to professional football scandals, there are simply too many to choose from. There’s former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and his dogfighting ring. There’s Pacman Jones and multiple off-the-field incidents. There’s the Cincinnati Bengals and the fact that members of the team were arrested 13 times between December 2005 and June 2007. There’s Tank Johnson and his weapon charges and DUI allegations, as well as Cedric Benson’s alcohol-related incidents. Is there any wonder why NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wanted to institute a personal conduct policy?

10. Operation Slap Shot : In February 2006, professional hockey was rocked when New Jersey law enforcement officials uncovered a multi-million gambling ring involving former NHL player and then Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet, as well as Janet Jones, the wife of the legendary Wayne Gretzky. Tocchet was one of three men accused of organizing a betting operation centering around NCAA football and the Super Bowl, but reportedly not hockey itself. In May 2007, Tocchet reached a plea bargain and was placed on two years of probation, and despite rumors to the contrary, no other NHL personnel were ever connected to the investigation, not even Gretzky.

World's Most Strangest Phobias

Posted by Editor John On Tuesday, December 09, 2008 1 comments
Trichophobia: Fear of loose hairs : If there's a hair in your soup you're fine, but if you see them everywhere, you might be suffering Trichophobia. From Greek Thrix (hair) and phobia (fear), it's the morbid disgust or fear caused by the sight of loose hairs on clothing or elsewhere.

Papaphobia: Fear of the Pope : Regarded as one of the most benevolent and wonderful individuals in the world, millions flock to him, hoping for his blessing... except for those who suffer "Papaphobia": an abnormal or persistent pathological fear of the pope or the papacy. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and overall feelings of dread. And it might not be only about the pope himself; a person with papaphobia may also be fearful of the Roman Catholic Church, so keep that popemobil away from them!

Arachibutyrophobia: Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth : Say what? You heard it. Eating a peanut butter sandwich is challenging for people with aracibutyrophobia, as they will freak out if the butter sticks to their mouth.

Nomophobia: Fear of being out of mobile phone contact : How do you feel when your phone has no network coverage? Can you turn off your mobile for a whole day? Whether you have run out of credit or battery, lose your phone or are in an area with no reception, being phoneless can bring on a panicky symptom in our 24/7 culture, described as "Nomophobia".

Ephebiphobia: Fear of teenagers : First coined as the "fear and loathing of teenagers," today the phenomenon is recognized as the "inaccurate, exaggerated and sensational characterization of young people" in a variety of settings around the world. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg has attributed the generation gap and the "increasing segregation of youth from adults in American society" to "adult estrangement and fear of youth." Fear of youth and their rejection is often disguised in a permissive attitude toward them.

Scopophobia: Fear of being looked at : Feeling an intense and irrational fear of being looked at or stared at, Scopophobics tend to avoid large public places such as shopping malls and other large gatherings of people. Even simple tasks like driving a car can be very difficult, as the sufferer will experience an acute sense of fear and uneasiness as they irrationally perceive others are staring at them, either from the cars beside them, or from the cars in front or back of them in their rear-view mirrors.

Spectrophobia: Fear of mirrors : This kind of specific phobia involves a morbid fear of mirrors and the dread of seeing one's own reflection. Psychoanalyst Sandor Ferenczi attributed it in one case to two main causes: fear of self-knowledge and flight from exhibitionism.

Phagophobia: Fear of swallowing : In milder cases a phagophobe eats only soft and liquid foods, and its fear is expressed in various swallowing complaints without any apparent physical reason detectable by physical inspection and laboratory analyses. Phagophobia may lead to (and be confused with) fear of eating, and the subsequent malnutrition and weight loss.

Vomitophobia: Fear of vomiting : Vomitophobia is the irrational fear of vomiting, being around others who are vomiting, and/or the vomit itself. In worst case scenarios, people with this particular phobia tend to avoid eating out, socializing and going to parties. They may hardly eat at all and that's why many are often diagnosed as anorexic, but not bulimic as this illness involves being overweight or at a healthy weight.

Triskaidekaphobia: Fear of the number 13 : One of the most common fears, but still senseless, even Adolf Hitler was triskaidekaphobic. There a specific fear of Friday the 13th as well, called paraskavedekatriaphobia. Tetraphobia is the fear of the number 4, more popular in China, Japan, and Korea.
