Top 10 Amazing Typewriter Art

This portrait of Nicole Kidman proves that some pictures really are worth a thousand words. A close-up [inset right] reveals that it was "drawn" on a typewriter .

Keira Rathbone spends up to 90 hours on each picture, hammering away on a variety of letters and punctuation marks thousands and thousands of times ..

Where most people's efforts would only produce a smiley face on the end of an email, Keira has typed detailed pictures of celebrities such as Tom Hanks...

.... and Kate Moss. Keira, from Poole, Dorset, discovered her talent after buying a 1960s typewriter for £5 in a charity shop .

She uses her right index finger to bash out the letters while her left hand winds the paper up and down ..

She frantically types over the same area several times to create dark shading and uses just a few letters for the lighter patches...

...and she sometimes uses the red typewriter ribbon to add a dash of colour .

This detailed picture of Bournemouth Pier in Dorset took 90 hours of hard work ..

"I mainly use a lot of dashes, colons, forward slashes and brackets, and have done landscapes, plants and portraits," she adds

Keira says: "I build up the shading by going over the same section of paper a number of times. Surprisingly I only get through about one ink ribbon a year"

Keira has just launched an exhibition of her work at the Grove Studio in Southbourne, Bournemouth ..

Amazing Sculptures Made With The Weapons Of War

A dragonfly fashioned from a machine gun barrel is just one of the works Iraqi artists are making from weapons of war.

Graduates of Baghdad University's College of Fine Arts say the project they started late last year takes objects that have brought devastation to Iraq and uses them to create beautiful things instead .

"It's a message from Baghdad to the world: we are transforming pieces of destruction into pieces of art," said sculptor Haider Muwafaq, laying down his blow torch .

The artists are unlikely to run out of materials. Iraq is one of the region's most militarised nations, awash with old weapons from Saddam Hussein's regime and new ones smuggled in by insurgents and militiamen.

Each day, the Iraqi Mine/Unexploded Ordnance Clearance Organisation (IMCO) destroys some 800 weapons, including AK-47 rifles, old-style British Bren guns, mortar rounds and belt-fed machine guns collected by US forces during raids .

The weapons sculptures at the small workshop in central Baghdad include a scrap metal fish, a robot...

...a metal harp sculpture...

..... and a version of the iconic bust of queen Nefertiti, wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten who was known for her beauty, carved into a rifle butt .

The group of artists and IMCO will open a gallery to the public in April. Cash from sales will go to orphanages keeping children who have been wounded by bombs or landmines, they said ..
